The gem is a special mineral that was secretly excavated by Ozai due to its absorbing qualities. After much study and experimentation, Ozai using his sage mode chakra was able to attune the stone to absorb nature chakra. (The stone absorbs nature chakra at a rate of 50 per post and allows Ozai to bypass standing still to collect his chakra towards sage mode. The stone can store up to 500 nature chakra in a single thread. The chakra doesn't carry over unless it is a continuation of the previous thread.) At first, he had just worn the stone as a necklace but later determined that it was too risky and had a medical ninja implant the stone into his sternum. With the stone being directly in his chest it allows him to directly draw nature chakra from its stores.
