Green Wall
The next old man Gekkido had the pleasure of coming into contact with was a farmer who lived just on the outskirts of town. His place had been raided after a party over the weekend and he and the old man stood staring at the results. Naked pictures plastered all over the wall in white, they both used a healthy dose of green paint to cover up the folly of youth. During this time, Gekkido picked the wise brain of the man to see if he could gain some insights into exactly what kinds of things a young man like himself should focus on. The old man smiled a short smile and began with a series of stories; at the end of which was a principle and a truth that if taken could be life saving. The first he said was that when he was young he was too focused on what everyone thought about him. This prevented him from pursuing things and people that would have been best for him for fear that he would lose his social life. In other words, socializing was his life, and he refused, or felt unable, to live without it. Group-think is the main killer of individualism, he told Gekkido. And to avoid that, one needed to ensure that though you love your friends, you do not live for them. The young man took this to heart and pondered how its application could help him. He'd never really struggled with this until recently when he'd been introduced to a group of individuals like minded enough for him to want their company on a regular basis. He was introduced to the vanity of social approval and being accepted by those who'd already accepted each other. Gekkido pondered how the old man had found a way to be independent and yet be considered a part of a group and welcomed into it. The old man shrugged and replied that he began with the right mentality and the rest fell into place. Once he chose to interact with the world as himself, only those who really liked him accepted him; he didn't have to try anymore. So to reach the point where he was appreciated for what he really had to offer in life, he had to offer it without apology; how interesting. The wall was finished by early evening, earlier than he or Gekkido expected. The old man thanked him for his company, and Gekkido thanked him for his wisdom. He finished off with returning the paint and setting up the fans. He waved goodbye and left for the next house with wisdom.
